Calendar additions?

I just added Google Maps to the ride addition interface.  If you put in a vague ride start or use the three letter code there is a field to enter a more precise start address.

Re: Calendar additions?

Why not make a dedicated thread for EVENTS related to bicycles as a new part of the FORUM? I am with Dan in that I generally hear about great bike fun and ways to support bicycling after the event.  How should we raise this idea to the leadership and get consensus on this?

It seems to me that our members are really hungry for a good active forum based on the numbers of views on these threads.

By 'dedicated thread' do you mean 'Forum'?  The BBC currently has 12 different forums, each of which is and can be "subscribed to" separately.

In my opinion all Forum traffic is sparse because people selectively subscribe to forums and only see part of the traffic that is on all the forums combined.

Adding yet another Forum would only make things worse.

It might be best to use one of the existing forums for this. How about using "General Questions & Comments" for bike events and changing the descriptive comment from "Questions related to the club and local riding"

to something like "Questions related to the club and local riding and ride events"  This might help create the kind of active discussion on a forum (not thread) that you want.

There are three areas of the Ride Calendar devoted to Events: Ride Events, Social Events, and Out of Bounds.
* Ride Events are BBC Events such as last week's Picnic and the upcoming Corn Roast.
* Social Events are BBC Socials such as the Year End General Meeting.
* Out of Bounds are non-BBC rides which are posted on our Calendar by either member request or by event request to the Road Captain or members.

Out of Bounds events do not appear on the BBC front page, you have to look at the Calendar.

Re: Calendar additions?

I understand what you are saying, but many times there is a lot more to say about things than just listing on the calendar.   Our members have a lot to share and it seems to me that the calendar is not the place..

A few more headings for forums would make it more intuitive for me...a day I'd like to think others.   For example, I am interested in bike touring.  Currently we are carrying conversations in "website suggestions"  "out of bounds" and one other that I can't recall.  I have I have to search to find the threads and when I do use it I often find things I wished I had seen earlier.

If we want to attract and keep members that are interested in all types of biking perhaps giving them a forum will help.

Re: Calendar additions?

I have no issue with having new Forum topics.  I still tend to treat the Forum as the old email.  I don't want to select only the issues I want, I go to the Forum and immediately select Topic View and go to the latest postings as I'm usually just wanting to see what new rides might be posted for the weekend.  I just wish I could delete the one's I'm not interested in and save the ones I wish to keep (sort'a like the way BBC Talk used to be???).

I do feel that bike events are perfect for the calendar as they tend to stay where they're needed on the calendar.  A heads up on the Forum is just that, a couple weeks later, its so far down the list, its virtually forgotten.  I don't mind long descriptions for ride or event info, especially in the list view, as its easy to scroll through, and always available if you've got a smart phone.  Maybe Janet Goldstein could chime in as to what category to put it into, though Out of Bounds rides seem to be the most likely to me.

Interesting discussion for me,

Re: Calendar additions?

1) I use the "Mobile View Rides" list 100% of the time instead of the calendar.  It is very clear, has plenty of room for detail and I cut and paste into my personal/work calendar rides I want to do.  If you are only looking at the calendar, consider trying this list.

2) I too sometimes have a hard time figuring out what "folder" in the forum to use.  Will and the team did a fantastic job of setting up the new website and further developing it but we could discuss, perhaps change some of the titles or even add some.

3) I subscribe to all of them and usually just delete if not interesting HOWEVER I really liked the old list-server as it was much more conversational and covered everything instead of being so 20-teens with everyone self-selecting where they get their news and residing only in their own silo's but that is as much a political statement as one of communicating bike interest.

I'm OK with more or revised categories if we can figure out what the best ones would be.  Need to decide and only change them rarely.  Stuart
