Curt 1 1/4 hitch and 1UP bike rack is a nice package

Curt 1 1/4 hitch and 1UP bike rack is a nice package

I've always gone with a roof rack and bike trays. After some recommendations from friends, I went with a 1 1/4 inch hitch receiver and a lower tray bike rack setup with my Lexus CT200h hatchback.

I must say it has been great. Installation of the hitch was super easy. And the 1UP rack is easy to setup and great for bikes.

The 1UP is a bit more expensive, but I think worth it. All CNC'd aluminum.

One issue some other folks have seen is that you can't mount the bikes if you have a flat tire. I think you might be able to if you had some foam or other material to stuff. Not a big issue for me, but thought I'd mention.

And I'm still working on a good setup for locking the bikes. Right now I'm using separate cable locks for each bike, locking to the bottom of the trays.

Re: Curt 1 1/4 hitch and 1UP bike rack is a nice package

Nice write up and pics Jim.

I've got roof racks, a Saris and a "Draftmaster" which is a very expensive, hitch mount system that holds a tandem and four singles or five singles.  I couldn't get a 2" receiver for my Volvo so I had to get a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter and it has worked fine.  Same kind of thing, it lowers to allow hatch access.  I have the optional Y shaped stand so the Draftmaster doubles as bike storage at home, vertical again and saves space, off the floor.

I wanted to add that the great advantages to these options is that you don't have the windage/drag on top of the car and don't risk the damage of the bikes if you go under something low, even branches in a driveway or something but the lack of noise is very peaceful.   As long as you don’t get hit from behind, everything is very nice.
Finally, so many racks touch the tubes which is just awful with nice paint jobs and clearcoat over nude carbon and the like.  I have a 1-Up trainer and they make really nice stuff.  Well done.

I keep threatening but one day I’m going to put the four Volvo racks on top of my wagon, and the Draftmaster on the back and load up nine bikes on the car for a photo shoot.  Personal Team Car!
