Cycling Routes

Re: Cycling Routes

Don't be scared unless you have won the big Lottery jackpot 5 times (~ the same odds as dying by bicycle in Maryland.) There is something about human nature that blows a rare event out of proportion. Two people die in car crashes every single day (on average) in Maryland yet somehow 7 cycling deaths a year makes people think cycling is the dangerous thing to do.

I wrote this article for One Less Car "Cycling is safe - a point of view" http://onelesscar.org/page.php?id=293 which I hope will remove some of the scary aspects about cycling.

Re: Cycling Routes

For the record, discussions of safety items such as lights and the batteries that power them are extremely topical and absolutely encouraged. Certainly I would like to know about those uber-bright lights that Isaias runs. Given all the miles he rides without major mishap, he's doing something right!

I use Dinotte headlights and tail light also.

I have the 800 -and- 400 lumen headlights and the 200 in the back. The headlights are using rechargeable lithium ion batteries and the tail light is on 4 AA (rechargeable NiMH).

I like the AA for the tail light, because if I'm on a reaaaaaally long ride (over 14 hours), I may need to replace the batteries during the ride. The AA's are ubiquitous enough to find just about anywhere except the remotest of areas.

On 200 milers, I've nearly run out of headlight power--scary when you need to travel high speed roads,... in the rain,... in the dark--my experience during the last double-century.

2013 mileage=12,169 miles;
2014 mileage=5,156 miles;
2015  mileage=6,200 miles;
2016 mileage=17,503 miles;
