Just got back, 42 miles without breakfast. Route looks good. I will read through the posts and respond.

Re: Ride to Annapolis on Monday?

I didn't think it wise to have one group or club responsible for this ride, a few reasons.
A-Liability
B-It's not just the BBC, posting here to get the word out but also on other club sites etc
C-Not one person or entity can be responsible for this. It is a spontaneous reaction to a tragedy and a need.

Re: Ride to Annapolis on Monday?

Hi Joe,
Is this Joe from Joe's bikes?
Anyway, I think it's a bit late to pick a new start point and Butler is pretty far from Annapolis. There is all kinds of talk of doing annual fundraiser for Larry's children, possibly the Belair to Ocean City ride he did every year.
Ghost bikes are fine but not sure they do much good and that stretch of road is so pretty.
My thinking for tomorrow is just to show support and no better way to do that than have hundreds of law abiding cyclist show their faces to the public. The hostility and disregard for cyclists has to stop or at least be recognized.

Re: Ride to Annapolis on Monday?

My ride  from my house, a couple miles from Starbucks on Roland to the Cromwell LR station was about 1 hour.-saddle time. Considering slowing for lights, slowing to talk to other riders, the windy BWI trail, the Baltimore group should have no trouble getting to Cromwell on time. The times we stated should be roll out times, of course knowing there may be delays. As for people joining at Marley, you can time it to meet the group or go on down and meet in Annapolis.
Looks like we may be getting press and they are being told that we will be in the area of Lawyers Mall/Statehouse square, adjacent to the State House.
Still working on whether we will need the police or whether we plan to all meet at the end of the B&A and ride in together.
It may end up being easier to just get everybody to the State House without delay.

I've talked the MD Annapolis Police Dept. and they would be happy to provide an escort but we won't know that until I see the numbers at Cromwell. They can dispatch a squad car if need be.

Re: Ride to Annapolis on Monday?

No more chatter on here. I have jpeg images of the Cromwell stop and where the B&A is in relation, where we congregate at the other end etc.
e-mail me and I will make sure you get the info.
If you're riding me you can get my map, Terry has it, pretty straight forward, we'll have a pdf. Aside from the city section and Hollins and Hammonds Ferry roads it's mostly on trail. Hollins Ferry Road is a nightmare though so if you're riding with me put some crappy rims on, or strong ones, and a spare tube or two.

Re: Ride to Annapolis on Monday?

No sorry that was me posting a quick update.

I talked to Penny @ Light Street Cycles on my way to the game. She had received the email this morning and I updated her on what was to happen tomorrow. She sent out an email to her group of riders and friends with links to the Forum post so perhaps we might get some more riders from there. The Butler start & Ghost Bike where her two cents worth as to possible ideas.

I agree changing the start to Butler is too late but perhaps some kind of 'event/ceremony', with permission from Larry's widow & family of course, on Butler might *might* maybe make people more aware that cyclists regularly use that road. I would say that if any group were to do that it would need to go through proper channels, be planned well in advance and have police presence. But I do think it could be another reminder to people, especially if the 3' Bill goes through. As much publicity or impact that we may make tomorrow it will be forgotten by next Monday. That would be one plus of a ghost bike - a constant reminder. (I know, not that many people would even notice however it just takes one person to be more aware.)

I also agree with all the comments in regards to having a club or 'name' behind this. On the one hand it could be good but it does present it's share of issues.

I will stick to my previously posted meet up with the group time & place - Sharp St @ the Convention Center @ 8:10am. I should be early there earlier than your group Harry; let me know if you change the cue Terry posted along that route.

Heading out to mass.  I'll look over what Harry did today and see if there is anything worth tweaking.  His message indicates there is not.  I may try to get the return trip on the same cue before 9 PM tonight and of course I'll be bringing prints of the cue to Marley.

Re: Ride to Annapolis on Monday?

After seeing Harry's cue from MapMyRide, I decided just to create one based on it from Marley to Annapolis and back.  Seeing we may well be getting the less experienced riders starting from there, I just wanted something simple for them to read and not have to figure out mileage discrepancies and such.  I know from Marley it's pretty simple, but if we get split because of traffic, I want people to have something with them.

As it is I'm thinking of taking up the rear so if a split does happen, I can shepherd the rear in.  Of course if we do get a police escort, it won't likely be a problem.

I'm not going to bother to upload what I did this evening.  It only goes from Marley to the state capital and back and since I'll be there to distribute to those that might want one, no use posting here.

Re: Ride to Annapolis on Monday?

BTW at this time on Facebook we show 17 confirmed and 17 maybe's.  Of course some of those confirmed are BBC members on FB.  Give me a call at some point Harry and I'll tell you how many we have assembling at Marley.  A good time would be when you get to the Cromwell lightrail station.  That way we will also get a better idea when the group will be arriving at Marley and maybe a decent estimate of whether the police escort should be called.
