FYI: Horse events next two weekends

FYI: Horse events next two weekends

According to the Valleys Planning Council's newsletter, there are some horse events coming up the next two weekends. There may be road closures, and there will certainly be lots of horses and riders in northern Baltimore County:

Saturday, April 17: Grand National Steeplechase
Saturday, April 24: Maryland Hunt Cup
Sunday, April25: Maryland Junior Hunt Cup

Please ride especially cautiously and courteously on these days

Re: FYI: Horse events next two weekends

More information on the equestrian events and related issues:

Thanks for posting this FYI. My husband is a member of BBC and bikes regularly in Baltimore County. I am an equestrian. Just an additional FYI - I'd appreciate it if you could mention in your post that horses are easily spooked by bikes because they don't hear the bikes. It is great when bicyclist call out to horse riders as they approach. Something simple - like passing or hello - so that we are alerted. This is especially necessary on Mantua Mill Road where bikers and riders often meet (extra necessary near the where the road makes a 90 degree turn and on the bridge).

On April 24th - Md Hunt Cup - Tufton Avenue will be closed to all traffic.

Sorry about the cyclist killed on Butler Rd. We often cross it and the drivers go way too fast.

Road Closures for Maryland Hunt Cup Steeplechase

Baltimore County, Md. (April 12, 2010) - The Baltimore County Police Department is advising local residents and others about temporary road closures set for Saturday, April 24, because of the Maryland Hunt Cup Steeplechase.

Beginning at 2 p.m., traffic heading east from Worthington Avenue on Tufton Avenue will be detoured onto Dover Road. Traffic officers and/or signs will be posted at intersections to direct diverted drivers back onto their intended routes. Traffic heading west on Tufton Avenue from Falls Road will frequently be stopped. This will allow race goers to safely cross Tufton Avenue on foot.

The following roads will be closed from 3-6 p.m. during the race and until most of the crowd leaves the temporary parking areas:
    * Worthington Avenue and Tufton Avenue
    * Belmont Avenue and Butler Road
    * Mantua Mill Road and Geist Road
    * Tufton Avenue and Falls Road
    * Dover Road and Tufton Ridge Road
