Re: Wiggins smashes UCI hour record with 54.526 kilometres

One of the ultimate records in sport was not just beaten but destroyed by a just retired legend for more than two decades on the grand tours of cycling.  After bursting on the scene in 1994, Jens Voigt retired this summer after completing his 17th Tour de France with numerous victories in many of the worlds great races including the Tour of California, the Giro d'Italia and the TDF.  His most famous quote and tagline has been "Shut up Legs" that has been adopted by cyclists around the world when they are pushing at and beyond their limit to stay out front and win a stage.

Many of the most legendary cyclists in history have held the hour record which is literally getting on a Velodrome track and riding as fast as you can for a solid hour timed.  There are strict rules and only real bicycles and positions are allowed.  All prior records were riding 40-something kilometers in that hour from a standing start.

Today, Jens Voigt at the age of 43 years old, with six children and a great career in the books and a fantastic TV career waiting for him had one more superhuman effort like he has been known for his entire career.  Today, the ultimate record belongs to Jens Voigt, who rode a distance of 51.115 km (31.76 miles) in 60 minutes.

Here is a good summary article (not too deep or in the weeds about it and the unbelievable effort required to even attempt it plus a bonus video that focuses on Jens.

If you find his story compelling, there are endless youtube videos and books and stories about Jens and from Jens who is one of the great entertainers in the sport.  I've seen him win and saw his most horrific crash live, but he came back and won all of our hearts.

Matthias Brandle covered 51.850 in the hour, surpassing Voigt’s mark of 51.115 set on 19 September 2014. He had looked on course to achieve his goal of covering 52 kilometers but faded inside the final ten minutes.

The Diario de Mallorca newspaper is reporting that Bradley Wiggins could be lining up for an attempt at the Hour Record in mid-2015 with the attempt reportedly to take place at the El Palma Arena in Mallorca.

Re: Wiggins smashes UCI hour record with 54.526 kilometres

British rider Sarah Storey came up short in her bid to beat Leontien Van Moorsel’s twelve year world hour record, covering a distance of 45.502 kilometres in Lee Valley VeloPark in London on Saturday and missing out by fractionally over half a kilometre.

Riding courageously, the multiple British Paralympic gold medallist dug in as deep as possible but taking on the pace set by one of the most successful female riders of all time proved to be too much.

Van Moorsel’s record of 46.065 kilometres was set at altitude in Mexico in 2003, and had remained unbeaten since then. Storey opted to go at sea level and was riding in a velodrome heated to approximately 25 degrees Celsius, facing two disadvantages from the off, but still believed that it might be possible to take the record.

Re: Wiggins smashes UCI hour record with 54.526 kilometres

Meeting expectations and smashing the previous record set on May 2 by Alex Dowsett, Bradley Wiggins covered a staggering 54.526 kilometres in his UCI hour record on Sunday.

The British rider followed his pre-stated strategy, reaching that pace inside the first 20 minutes and sticking very close to it for the remainder of his effort. While he was up to an average page of over 54.6 kilometres for much of the effort, he slowed very fractionally in the last ten minutes.

Despite that, his pace eclipsed that of Dowsett, who covered 52.937 on May 2 in Manchester.
