Visitor question about "Put Your Heart Into It" ride

Visitor question about "Put Your Heart Into It" ride

Hi,

I'm going to be visiting from Philly next weekend and am planning to lead a small group of riders on the "Put Your Heart Into It" ride (located here on your website).  I rode this route a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much, but I was hoping to verify that there haven't been any changes in road conditions (e.g., bridge closures, etc.) that might have arisen since that time.

Is anyone aware of any road problems affecting this route?

Thanks!
Bob

Re: Visitor question about "Put Your Heart Into It" ride

Bob,
This is my fav 'local' ride.I've done it many times & most likely rode with you when you did it a few years ago.
The route was fine last year when I rode it & I'm not aware of any current closures etc.

However, there are a few things about the cue that I think are worth mentioning.
1) A few folks have missed the L turn onto Deer Park rd @ mile 22.3 because the sign for Deer park is either obscured or missing.
2) After you make the turn onto Deer Park @ mile 22.3 you wll descend down to a bridge. The deck(ing) of the bridge is in quite bad shape.
3)You must retrace the route(return the way you came on Rt 32) when you leave the rest stop.
I hope this helps & that you have a good ride.
(I'd love to join you,but I'll hopefully be joining 'Rando Bob' on his 'Rando ride' on Sun. :-)

Please  note also that there is a bridge closed somewhere on Deer Park Road (the same one?)

Unfortunately, Janet's got it right. The Deer park/Nicodemus rd. Bridge is out for construction. Although I haven't been down there to see whether it's possible. Anyone know for sure? You'll have to use the detour.

You'll have to jog over to Hanover Pike. L on Glen Falls. R on Hollingworth. L on Emory. X rt140 & it bcms Gamber

I have today off and will be driving (what's that?) in the Owings Mills area anyway so I'll check it out. Google maps does not allow walking or biking directions across the bridge, but it does allow walking. So, I don't know whether the bridge deck is still intact or not. If it is not possible then it will certainly cut off one of the nicest stretches of your route and the detour will add 5 1/2 miles.

BTW your detour would begin at mile 19.5 mi on your cue.

I did manage to dart down to lake liberty on Deer Park rd. and while the deck of the bridge is still there, it is NOT passable because the entire area is fenced off. Sorry. You'll have to run the detour. FWIW, there are some very nice sections of Glen Falls and Hollingsworth.       -Bob

All,

Thanks a *ton* for the info, and particularly to Bob for the personalized bridge recon and detour instructions.  Truly outstanding service!

Hope to bump into you on the road some day (figuratively, of course!).

Thanks again.

Re: Visitor question about "Put Your Heart Into It" ride

One more quick question for anyone who may know...

Because Bob W's detour adds a few miles, I was thinking of trying to shave a few miles by taking either London Bridge Rd or Klees Mill Rd south from Sykesville Rd to Bartholow (via Cherry Tree Ln, in the case of London Bridge Rd).

Just wondering if anyone is aware of any "gotchas" with respect to road conditions or bridge outages on London Bridge or Klees Mill.

Thanks again!

Re: Visitor question about "Put Your Heart Into It" ride

Bob,
Your Klees Mill rd re-route looks fine. I haven't been down it in a few months, but it's just farms and exurbs.  Shouldn't be a problem.

Another thought would be to eliminate the little "foot" near the start that goes Frederick to Hollofield to Dogwood, etc.
Instead, you could just go L on Old Fred and R on Woodstock up to Granite. It does lop off nice sections along Wrights Mill and davis which is a shame, but it also gets rid of that nasty hill up Dogwood rd.

Have fun riding.      -Bob
