Cyclist Killed On Roland Avenue

Cyclist Killed On Roland Avenue

The Baltimore Sun reported this morning on a rider (Thomas Palermo) killed yesterday in the 5700 block of Roland Avenue. Palermo was using the south-bound bike lane on Roland when he was hit, apparently from behind. The driver, a 57-year old woman, initially fled the scene, then returned. Her Subaru station wagon's windshield was badly cracked.

Who among us doesn't think that next time it could be us? We can usually avoid potential accidents involving cars in front and on our flanks (if we're careful). It's the cars coming up from behind that pose the most potential for disaster. Fortunately, most motorists respect our rights to the road (if they didn't there'd be a lot more accidents). It's the ones that don't, like that woman in her Subaru, that I worry about. The sure solution is to give up road riding (at least 2 people I know did because of their angst regarding traffic) and stick to the trails. The other, which is no solution at all, is to hope our number never comes up.

I hope they throw the book at her, for once. Too many inattentive drivers get away practically scot-free with killing and injuring cyclists.

Re: Cyclist Killed On Roland Avenue

I was looking at the pics of the wrecked bike, and it seemed clear (to me) from looking at the setup (substantial bar drop, etc.) that this guy - Tom Palermo - was probably an experienced rider who probably knew how to interact correctly on the road.  It turns out that Tom was in fact a local framebuilder (http://www.palermobicycles.com/).

My sense is that if the drive is found to be at fault, s/he may well be charged with some cockamamie misdemeanor motor vehicle infraction as often seems to be the case, but she may well get dinged quite considerably harder with some charge involving leaving the scene of an accident - especially with a gravely injured cyclist.

Shame about this....

A frame builder, same as another Tom and frame builder killed in 2005, Tom Bruni. Eerie coincidence.

Re: Cyclist Killed On Roland Avenue

Assuming that this is the same person, looks like she was arrested in 2010 for DUI with a 0.27 alcohol level, a near-empty whiskey bottle in the car and a pipe: http://www.myeasternshoremd.com/news/ca … l?mode=jqm

Yeah, just like we hear from so many:  'them damn cyclists.  They're unsafe and have no place on the roads.'.....PHOOEY!

Question of the Day:

Is there irony in a woman of God driving like this? No, the faithful might say; we're all sinners.

It's the same lady as the 2010 incident.

Re: Cyclist Killed On Roland Avenue

Here's the article about her arrest back in 2010. I can't believe she claims to be a woman of God. They say that God forgives and forgets, well I hope he fires her after this and chases her away at the gates of heaven when her day comes.
