Re: Cyclist Killed On Roland Avenue

That is an interesting and thought-provoking article.  A thought I had while reading - how many cyclists are injured or killed by African-American drivers or drivers low on the economic ladder?  In most deaths of cyclists involving a motor vehicle that come to mind, the driver seems to be white and middle to upper class.  Perhaps other cases just do not get as much publicity?

Re: Cyclist Killed On Roland Avenue

Almost nailed a cyclist at 5:45am on Walther blvd. I had just made a left onto the southbound lane. Here's a cyclist going the wrong way in the bike lane! With a dim light, dressed in black, on a black bike, drifting (he was going downhill) but staring at the pavement.

Never saw him until he was five feet away.

When I made the left, I'm sure I swayed into the bike lane. if this was two seconds later, My truck and his bike would have been occupying the same space.

Sorry, if this is not the proper place to post. But it's been bothering me since it happened.

Fellow cyclists, please be careful.

Note that the Baltimore Sun is running a poll "Should criminal charges be filed against the driver who struck and killed a cyclist on Roland Avenue last month and initially left the scene before returning?"  Vote at baltimoresun.com/vote The result will probably be published Jan. 8 on the Op-Ed page.

I realize that I am 'preaching to the choir' so to speak....but no one stepped out in front of the Right Rev. Cook.  God forbid that she actually drive in the proper through lane instead of the mowing down someone directly from behind in the bike lane.....

The new State's Attorney for Baltimore will hold a press conference tomorrow (Friday 1/9/15) at 11:00am, per the Baltimore Sun:

The charges are in with regard to Bishop Cook: Vehicular Manslaughter, Texting While Driving, DUI and Leaving The Scene of an Accident.

I read where the manslaughter charge can be tough to prove. Apparently, the state's attorney's office has strong evidence to back it up. I wonder if this will be a plea bargain deal or full-length trial. Stay tuned.

Properly tough charges for an apparently incredibly irresponsible act. Here's to the new States Attorney being aggressive in pursuing the toughest charges possible with the evidence available.
