Ride Leader First Aid Kit

Ride Leader First Aid Kit

Reflecting on both Nigel's recent crash and my own lesser wipeout on Bike Virginia, I am looking for suggestions on what would be prudent for a ride leader to carry as in a minimalist first aid kit. I was happy that some passers by were able to offer sterile wipes to clean up my scrapes. In the past, I have lead rides with nothing to offer folks with road rash. I now carry a small sandwich bag with antiseptic towlettes (Benzalkonium Chloride), a few 'ketchup' packs of antibiotic ointment, along with a couple of gauze pads and adhesive bandages. Curious to hear thoughts from other folks, and whether we should consider adding this to the ride leader check list.

Re: Ride Leader First Aid Kit

Larry, this is a great question to ask.

Leaders should probably have some understanding of how to assess and assist in a concussion situation.
Also, an understanding of how best to handle vehicle on bike crashes.
How best to move someone off of a roadway safely?

Might be nice to have a little wiki/info page on the site here for ride leaders and maybe all of us.

I can contribute info about vehicle/bike crashes, if we can set up a page to put.

Re: Ride Leader First Aid Kit

Great topic and important!

I have a tiny med kit that I pack, pretty much all the time.  I keep a clean bandana, a couple sterile wipes, some ibuprofin, a couple of Benadryl tablets(in case someone gets stung), a feminine pantyliner (yep, those ones) ... which you can strap on a bloody wound (with the bandana) to keep the blood contained, suntan lotion, and bacitracin. It all fits into the bag that goes under the seat.  So far, I haven't needed to use any of this on anyone but me!  LOL
