Re: Save Shawan Rd and our environment

I'm going; who else?

This is not the kind of event I attend, normally -- especially on a weeknight -- but it is vitally important to restrict development in Northern Baltimore County and environs, where so many BBC members ride. Please step up to protect this vital area.

Re: Save Shawan Rd and our environment

Looking forward to see you tomorrow night Janet!

I do think this is a cycling issue, and on a number of fronts especially if you take the long view. It is true that it will increase the traffic Shawan Road. It will also increase the traffic on the roads that feed Shawan and lead to the church, many of the roads we like to ride on. And it will not just be on Sundays. This will be a large facility and they have big plans for near continuous services that take place through the week as well as Saturday and Sundays. This is not just Sunday morning as many may be thinking.  And recall that it was not that long ago from when BBC rides left from the Hunt Valley Inn parking lot until traffic made that an undesirable option. The Oregon Ridge ride start area has become increasing busy... I think we would all hate to see that go the same way.

It is also important to realize the property where this church is to be built has a preservation easement on it as do many, many of the properties in the Worthington Valley and Northern Baltimore County. The granting of waivers like this undermines the land/ag preservation efforts that have been going on for over 50 years in this area. It sets precedent and makes it easier for others to come in and get the land/ag preservation restrictions waived.

This is why the BBC should care. It may be Shawan Road that is impacted today. In the future it could be Butler Road, Dover Road, Stringtown Road, Mt Zion Rd, etc. Many, many of the farms that we enjoy riding by have land preservation easements that keep the development out. It sends a chill to farm owners who might consider putting their farms into preservation, giving up valuable development rights.
