Merrymans Mill Bridge Closure to Cyclists

Merrymans Mill Bridge Closure to Cyclists

I was recently was driving over the bridge spanning Loch Raven reservoir on Merrymans Mill Road near Cockeysville.  This is an old steel bridge that has always had a warning sign to watch out for slippery conditions.  On both sides of the bridge, there are new warning signs stating "Pedestrians & Bicycles Not Permitted on Bridge."  This is only bridge connecting the York road region to points East. The alternative is to use Hwy 145 to the North or Hwy 146 to the South.

I contacted  Bike Maryland and Nate Silver is looking into the closure. It came out that a reason behind the closure was due to the danger posed by the spaces between the metal plating on the bridge.  Allegedly, a serious accident has occurred in the past.

I have ridden the bridge for years without any problems other than being passed by impatient drivers while I am crossing. Has anyone else experienced any difficulties? I don't believe that the slats on the metal grates are wide enough to admit a tire but I will look at this myself this weekend.

I just thought the members should be aware of this closure. There may be a hearing in a few weeks where public input on this issue will be considered.

Re: Merrymans Mill Bridge Closure to Cyclists

Technically it is Warren Rd Bridge.  I have ridden it and it is disconcerting to look down since it is an open steel deck, rather than full steel plating.  When you look down on a sunny day, then you can see your underside reflected in the water below - way cool!
This bridge is no more dangerous then many similar bridges in the area (e.g. Falls Rd below the dam; Sparks Rd by the NCR Trail; etc.).
