Dear Cyclists:
Thank you for forwarding the emails from cyclists who have become aware of the roundabout planned for the Tufton/Worthington/Greenspring intersection. As you know, at rush hour, this intersection has many challenges for both cars and bikes.
Several years ago, VPC hired consultants to develop a concept for a roundabout, which eventually, the county adopted and is currently designing. Construction should start this summer. We believe this will slow cars down and make the intersection safer for all users.
This roundabout should be less confusing for drivers, as there are only three legs, and it is a modified one-lane design. Only one leg has two lanes, and that would be the approach on Worthington Avenue coming from the historic Glyndon direction, heading towards Greenspring Valley.
As you approach from that area, there will be two lanes -- one going straight and one for left-turning vehicles to continue around the circle. The other two approaches will just have one lane of traffic to consider.

We would be interested in your concerns and comments.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the proposed roundabout at the intersection of Tufton Avenue and Greenspring/Worthington Avenue. The County certainly promotes the development of bicycle facilities that provide desirable levels of accessibility and safety. Although the existing roadways leading to the roundabout are narrow, we believe the proposed roundabout provides wider lane widths to accommodate bicyclists. Please see the attached plan sheet of the roundabout for your use.

Re: Tufton-Greenspring-Worthington Roundabout Planned

Seems pretty obvious from the design sheet that anyone coming eastbound from Worthington to Greenspring ave is gonna roll through that circle at 50mph. Any cyclist attempting a left from Tufton to G'spring would be dead meat.

The best circle alignments are when all feeder roads point directly to the center of the circle like it's a T intersection. Then drivers slow down significantly, and bear right after careful inspection of the traffic.

This looks like a disaster.

The pavement on the Worthington to Greenspring side also narrows appreciably creating a pinch point for cyclists unless they fully take the lane (which is the way to go, IMO...).   I have passed my comments on.

Re: Tufton-Greenspring-Worthington Roundabout Planned

* Anyone riding Westbound Greenspring continuing onto Worthington will be in conflict with traffic entering from Tufton while having to travel almost 3/4's of the way around the circle.

* All riders and others who currently park on the southeast shoulder of Tufton will have to park elsewhere.  There is no parking on Belmont.  There is a small area at the northwest end of Garrison Forest and one across from Mr Charles on Park Hts. which will force commuting riders to use the roundabout.
