Petition to remove "Blackout date" from ride Schedule

Petition to remove "Blackout date" from ride Schedule

I request that the "blackout" imposed on Sat. the 19th of Jun. be removed immediately.

This blackout date is clearly counterproductive to the stated goals / mission of the BBC as quoted from the BBC website:

" The BBC's Mission -- The Baltimore Bicycling Club (BBC) was established in 1967 and has a membership of over 1700 riders. The mission of our not-for-profit recreational organization is to promote and sponsor bicycling activities in Baltimore City and neighboring Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard counties."

The Flatlands tour is in Cecil Co.

Carl, I like the shake it up attitude. No disagreement here.
Having club-wide events are definitely important to bring us all together and I suppose blackouts facilitate that, but I sure would love to see more support for rides in our own backyard.

THIS is why we LOVE CARL!!  Oh, and the original lyrics to classic rock.  I never did understand the concept of a blackout date, it's like if people have no other choices on flatlands, picnic, CWC or other days they will be FORCED to participate?  I don't think so, and (as in this case) what if folks who are local want to do a local ride without involving a drive in a car?  I also stand in support.

Bob ,

All BBC rides have the same goal - provide an opportunity for it's members & others to unite / gather & enjoy their common interest / passion - cycling !

They only thing these blackout dates 'facilitate' is censorship & censorship 'facilitates' tyranny. I'm vehemently opposed to both.

Another stated mission goal of the BBC is to advocate for / protect the rights of ,cyclists.

Who is protecting / what are our rights as BBC members? Who,why, how ,has someone been granted the power to impose these blackouts? When ,where, how, have I agreed  to forfeit my right(s) to schedule a ride of my choice ,on a date of my choice?

Re: Petition to remove "Blackout date" from ride Schedule

One of the biggest problems in this club is a lack of volunteers to make the club work. The club special events, that are blackouts, require considerable effort on the part of all too few of our members. Instead of some adolescent whining about the "terrible tyranny" of a special event that is a black out date, I suggest that you call an event leader and asking what you can do help out with the event. The members of our club who make these events happen don't get to ride the event or their own ride on the event day so that the rest of us can. Every special event that the BBC puts on can use more help. Time to grow up and give back to the club folks.

I think what Ed is reminding us is that "they" is "us" so, we should tread lightly on those who are trying their best to improve the club.

However,  Carl's original post is worth discussing. Do we want to make a ride that is 65 miles from Baltimore City an exclusive ride for the day? Perhaps we serve the club's mission better by promoting a ride a little closer to Baltimore. Or, at least to allow rides in our own city/county onto the schedule.

Re: Petition to remove "Blackout date" from ride Schedule

If anyone participating in this thread is really serious about ending any or all of the blackouts for the club special events, here is what you need to do. Contact the club President Georgia Glashauser and ask that she make the request to end blackouts an agenda item for a Board meeting. Any club member can attend any Board meeting (the Board meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month except December at 7 PM). We just need advance notification to know if you are coming. Right now we are still searching for a new meeting place; Barb Park's failing health precludes using her home as we have for many years. So I cannot give you a location at this time. The last two Board meetings have been at Bob Roswell's System Source offices in Hunt Valley; that location may not be available for July.
I would be prepared with a very strong argument. You will have to convince many of the club members on the Board who have been busting their buns and balls, the event leaders, why you want to make their job harder and less relevant. If you do a petition, this Board member will expect to see at least 500 signatures of paid-up members to get my attention. BTW, anyone can get a log in to this website; you do not have to be a BBC member, so a poll from this web site won't do it.
Having said all of this, I also want to say the Board really does try to make the club responsive to member's requests. While some of the comments in this thread have made me angry, at least you are making your concerns known. That I can deal with. The real problem is the apathy of so many of our members.

Ed, no worries. I think it's just you and me on this thread anyway.  current/hmm

There are many worthwhile concerns brought up on these forums that are worded harshly or inappropriately. That's fine with me. It means people care about what's going on. That membership you criticize is all of us remember, apathetic or not.

It's not because of apathy that I'm not a better volunteer for the BBC; it is because of the worry that I'll become disenchanted after putting in a lot of work for very little thanks. Therefore, I will give as much as I like and nothing more. That way I'm more likely to be around for the long haul.        -Bob

Re: Petition to remove "Blackout date" from ride Schedule

Yeah, Love and Hate are very close to each other, it is indifference and apathy that are so hard to deal with and painful.  The club has 1700 members and of the 506 signed up for the website, I'm sure there are a lot of lurkers there.  We have two handfuls of people that regularly post and I'll bet very few are signed up to be "alerted" to posts, many fewer I suspect than were on BBCTalk, at least in digest form.

I am willing to help with converting cues if we go that way.  I could download them and convert to PDF at least.  What would really be great is if someone (me?) worked their way through the entire posted library and put them all into a common template (like Craig's Cue Sheet Form) and in a common type size, formatted to print in as standard a way as possible.  It would be a lot of work and take quite a while for gainfully employed peeps but a worthwhile project if there was an agreed to plan.  One key issue in that is how do we re-attribute rides to the original owner where it is known instead of it then showing the person who re-posted it?

The other thing brought up years ago was to take as many of the better rides as possible and try to work out multiple pace/length rides from common start points with common lunch wherever possible.  Nothing is better than the big events where we have all types of people at the start at least, and sometimes at the lunch and finish.  It’s cool but that is even more work!
