Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

It's on the Blue Ridge Century route.  Part of the deck has been removed.  Difficult to wade across but at least one rider did do it today.  Instead we went down Wilhide Rd, left at "T" onto Stevens, left on Old Frederick Rd.  That dumps out onto 550 and meets up with Black Mill Rd a hundred ft from there.

Terry, thanks for the info. At about what mile mark did you guys have to detour? I'll need to fix the cue sheet before I lead this ride in a few weeks.

Re: Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

If you look on a map, the bridge that is out is between the intersections of Black Mills Rd / Wilhide Rd and Black Mills Rd / Layman Rd.  This would be after the 68.1 mile entry on the Blue Summit Cue sheet.  The distance from that cue entry and the recommended detour (right on Wilhide Rd is 1.3 miles.

Re: Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

Thanks, Terry! Someone else found an error on the Blue Ridge Summit cue sheet, apparently: at mile 13, on Kump Station Rd., it's a left rather than the indicated right. Does anyone else out there agree with this? I've been using the same cue sheet for years and had only one other complaint about that turn....

Re: Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

Can anyone with mapping software provide distances for these legs of the Blue Ridge Summit Century detour in Thurmont?
From Blacks Mill Rd. (67.9 mi. cue): R on Wilhide, L on Stevens, L on Old Frederick R on 550, R on Longs Mill. Thanks in advance!

Re: Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

0.0 Right on Wilhide Rd
0.7 Left on Stevens Rd
1.5 Left on Old Frederick Rd
2.7 Left on Rt 550 (Creagerstown Rd).
2.9 Right on Longs Mill Rd.

Distance between Blacks Mill Rd / Wilhide Rd and Blacks Mill Rd / RT 550 is 1.5 miles

Re: Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

Okay, folks, the BBC's toughest century just got tougher. The detour around the road closure at Blacks Mill between Wilhide and Layman adds 6.3 miles to the longest leg of the ride (now >36 mi. without a store) if we take the suggested detour.

That gives me an idea: I could reroute the ride to avoid the detour and add a rest stop in Thurmont by getting rid of the climb up Tower/Catoctin Hollow followed by the white-knuckle descent and that idyllic little stretch of Route 15. Consider: instead of turning off Rt. 77 onto Catoctin Hollow at mile 60.5, we'd continue a little farther to Tippin Dr., which would take us past fast-food restaurants, the ever-popular Rocky's Pizza, and a convenience store. Then we'd take Moser Rd. (which becomes Rt. 550) all the way into Creagerstown and pick up the cue sheet at Longs Mill. The new rest stop at about mile 61 could even be the official lunch stop: it's got lots more choices than Blue Ridge Summit, PA.

Any objections, y'all?

Re: Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

Well, of course taking out the dreaded Tower climb and the incredibly fun, scary and dangerous white knuckle descent that has added so much to my "rep" will really change the character of the ride but it might be interesting and fun to do something a little different this year and return to normal once the roads are back together.  Heck, why would I complain, I got hit by my first car last year at that intersection at RT-15 when I got right-hooked into the Jersey Wall!  See you in a couple of weeks.  Stuart

Re: Bridge out - Black Mill Rd @ Wilhide Rd

I'm still tweaking the cue sheet for the rerouted Blue Ridge Summit Century this coming Saturday. Could somebody with mapping software please provide distances for the following legs? Thanks!

Moser Rd. (Thurmont) to 550 (Creagerstown)
550N/W to Longs Mill Rd.
