Cue Library

Cue Library

A great service doing the transfer.  Checking what is uploaded I find many of my cuesheets had not been maintained well by me on cuesheetcentral.  So I am going through and correcting those older cuesheets which I had uploaded to cuesheetcentral and which have been transferred to the new library.  Several comments:

* Who controls access to cuesheets for edits/deletes/uploads?  This is an issue where a cuesheet might be changed inadvertently or otherwise.  See next point.

* I am finding that cuesheets which I had already put into the Cue Library for upcoming rides I will lead are being duplicated due to the transfer process.  I am just keeping the ones I already loaded since they came from my local cue library and deleting the others.

* The "Starting point Google map" seems to load Mapquest locations for some starting points.  How do we link into the Starting Point database to add these to our library entries?
Meadowood Park Google map point seems to be The Cloisters and not the park.

* There is no way to edit the title of a cuesheet (correct spelling, etc.).

* Could we have an option to control the number of cuesheet titles shown per page so the user doesn't have to flip between pages?

* Would it be possible to insert standard forum codes in library descriptions in addition to html?

* I don't think there should be a download limit for user who submitted the cuesheet.  A pain to be correcting stuff and then get "Sorry, your download limit has been reached".

Re: Cue Library

More comments on the layout of the Cue Library page:

* Over 17 lines at the top of the page are dedicated to file upload instructions.  These should be at the bottom of the page.  People looking for cuesheets are not interested in these instructions.

* The "Search Repository" button should be above the Containers.  It is now hidden at the bottom of the page.

* The "Folders/Files" is too technical.  Will there ever be more than 2 Folders (below 50 miles and >=50 miles) per county?  Instead I think each county should have Under 50 and 50+ shown on this page.  Then user does not have to do another page load.
Then instead of "Files" they can be labeled "Cuesheets"

Editing some of my entries to correct the start points is a pain.  Maybe my html is not what it should be.  To do the edit: Download the cuesheet (I need it to make an edit change); paste in the html for the google map startpoint and browse/open the cuesheet file; update the library entry;  ...but the html seems not to be correctly displayed so I browse/open the cuesheet file again and update (with no edit change to html);  and now google start point is correct.
Any hints on what I need to do.  How about a startpoint database which the cuesheet author can edit/add.

(That download of cuesheet seems to trigger a limit warning, even though I am the author of the cuesheet)

Re: Cue Library

I increased limits so you should not have that limitation.

The file system is a pre-coded module that I customized.  Some code change was necessary to suit the club's purpose, however, a major rewrite of the code is not practical.

Will/BBC Board: could you give some guidance or rules on how the "update" procedure should work. Two particular cases come to mind that are especially murky:

1)  I lead a ride someone else did; I find that their cue sheet is flat out wrong in some respect. I want to submit a corrected cue sheet to their ride. Can I do this? Should I do this? Do I leave a comment about what the error was?

2)  I lead a ride that I did the cue sheet for (or someone else did the cue sheet.). On pre-riding the ride I find that a bridge is out so I come up with a temporary version of this cue that I want to put in the library so that people going on the ride can pull it out ahead of time.  When the bridge is fixed, the old cue sheet should become the one that is pulled out.  This kind of temporary cue sheet is something that happens all the time. What should we do?  (One can always put a "new" cue sheet in the library with a new name "Boring Loop--bridge out" and this would work but it would lead to a needless proliferation of cue sheets in the library. )

Re: Cue Library

If you submitted a cue sheet you should be able to edit it.  If someone else submitted a cue then you need to contact that person to make changes.  This system is the most secure so people can't go willy nilly changing other people's work.

Will

Two points, one technical question and a comment

1)  what I asked for and what I think we need are guide lines (and rules) on the Cue Library page explaining how to update a cue sheet or how to make a temporary correction to it.  Currently there are NO guidelines or information on how to change a cue sheet that is in the library.

2)  You raise an entirely new issue of "willy nilly" changes to cue sheets. You add that you have security in place to prevent this from happening.  I don't think any club member would "willy nilly" change someone else's cue sheet.  You are protecting against a non-existent threat. I think you have put "security" in place that will just prove to be cumbersome, that will make it harder for the cue sheet library to be kept up to date.  Why not make the security of the cue library much looser: allow all registered users to change cue sheets.  If someone screws something up, we will know who they are and appropriate action can be taken.  (Make them go on rides without a helmet for a few times.)  I think we should start with more liberal controls on the cue library and only tighten them up if there are problems.  Let's not start out thinking the members of the club are a bunch of malicious idiots who will willy nilly mess up the work of others. Let's start with a flexible open system that will encourage all to keep the cue sheets up to date.

question: is the cue library set up so that it is possible to go back to an earlier version of a cue sheet?  Or is the updating of a cue sheet a destructive action that removes the old cue sheet?  (The relevance of this question to the previous points is obvious.)

comment: most of my cue sheet work has been modifying the wonderful old cue sheets of others so that the cue sheets now work.  If it is not easy to do this, people will just submit a new cue sheet with a slightly different name and leave the old one in the library. The old one will be wrong but will remain in the library.  This is basically the state of cuesheetcentral: tons of cue sheets that don't quite work anymore.  Let's try to set up a system that will ease the most common activity involving cue sheets: tweaking them a bit so they still work.

thanks

Re: Cue Library

Ed,

My concern is not about BBC members but non-members.  I already had one bozo consistently register on the site with bogus names and addresses - basically a new bogus name everyday or two since the new website went live.  (I think I was able to ban his IP address through the host provider of this site.)  Just think what could happen to cue sheets by malicious people editing turns and street names.  I am afraid we need controls.

Re: Cue Library

I agree with Will. On CSC, only the author of a ride or Phil could edit/remove a ride. The hard part is contacting someone who has editorial control when you find a mistake in a cue sheet. Some rides have authors that are not in the club any more or there is no author. Phil could be hard to contact at times also.
What is needed, of course, is a club librarian who has editorial rights to correct cue sheets that have mistakes or more likely makes changes because of construction changes to a road. It is a very important job and too much for the web site administrator. One of the impediments to new members leading a ride is anxiety about a route. A full cue sheet libraries with rides in the Baltimore area, would be a help to increasing the number of rides available.
Any volunteers?

Anybody responding to my other issues in posts 1,2,3 on this thread (or should I make them each separate threads)?
