Cue Library

Re: Cue Library

Will

I had no idea that this kind of thing was happening. (I suppose I should have though.)

However I think there is still a need here for some way to facilitate the updating of cue sheets. How about a special set of "trusted users" that are allowed to freely make these changes. I suspect there are only 30 or 40 of us who do this and a lot of us know each other and could vouch for each other. Is something like that feasible given the constraints you are working with?

And we still need the overview on the cue sheet page on how to make changes.  As it stands now who is it exactly who can make changes to a cue sheet: the "author" who is sometimes "unknown" or the person who submitted the cue sheet--which need not be the same person.  So in addition to "File Upload instructions" and "File Download instructions" we need a "File change instructions"

And do answer my technical question: Does an "update" destroy the old cue sheet?

And, I just saw Ed Cahill's suggestion come in about having a Cue sheet librarian doing this work. Ed: how about my suggestion of a distributed set of "cue sheet librarians" taking the form of trusted users?  Not only is this work too great for the web site administrator, it is also too much work for a single cue sheet librarian.

Maintaining a library is extremely important. Let's put a good solution in place.

Re: Cue Library

I have no problem with several club librarians; it is a big job and I am sure Gene Bayer would love to have some help. Perhaps having several members hare the work would encourage more volunteers.
The club has a CD of rides that date from the club's beginning; I have my own library going back to the 80's. Almost all of these rides are useless due to road and housing construction changes in our area. The acquiring, updating and maintaining rides is a very large job.
The advent of GPS bike computers that can store routes will also have to be addressed. I will ride the Colorado Rocky Mountain Bike Tour in August. The route is posted on MapMyRide.com and can be downloaded into a GPS bike computer. Our cue sheets will need to be put into a file that can be downloaded to stay current with technology.
The Board will review the website on the next meeting. I will suggest that the cue sheet library also be re-evaluated in terms of updating and increasing the nuymber of rides. Multiple librarians seems like a good idea to me.
BTW, I have looked at the library as it sits in the new website. I like using Google maps to locate the ride start. What I miss that is in CSC is the ability to copy the ride to the ride schedule by clicking on the "Lead It" button. It is a great time saver and the ride details are accurate since I don't have to retype them myself.
One idea that I have floated at the Board meeting (and has been punctured there) is a contest for the best new ride in each ride category each year. If anyone thinks that this is a good idea and wants to develop it, let me or anyone on the Board know.

The Cue Library needs to allow multiple uploads for each entry:
- Print cuesheet
- gpx or course xml format for gps bike computers
- Detour notice link to detour cuesheets
- Ride starts specified by Lon/Lat (easy paste into google/mapquest/...)

Uploads and edits should not require the entire entry be reloaded.

A way needs to be implemented to link library entries with each other, to the calendar, and to the forum.  Then forum discussion of a cuesheet can occur (say prior to a ride as members choose a ride via the forum) and a calendar scheduled ride can link to the library cuesheet.

Re: Cue Library

As the person moving the bulk of the rides over, I appreciate the feedback. As I told Steve separately, I added the Google map links where I could though some actually link to Mapquest. The reason for this is that the State of MD links to MapQuest for the park and rides so I used those with the assumption that MD actually knew where they were. I did not however change my text shortcut so it still inserts Google rather than Mapquest. The starting points was a pet peeve of mine because I had difficultly finding most of our starting points to begin with.

I would be happy to fix anything that I have put in. I have tried to be careful but I am hardly infallible. I would also be happy to volunteer to assist in keeping this up to date since I am getting pretty familiar with the site itself.

Re: Cue Library

I am up to the "M"s in the >50 rides. I am now using Steve's improved starting maps going forward. I will circle back after I am done to update the older maps.
