B&A Trail conditions

B&A Trail conditions

Anybody been to the B&A (and or BWI) trails after the storm? Is it ridable? Any ice?

Re: B&A Trail conditions

I must admit to having no first hand knowledge of the trails, but I would have to guess that any bike/ped trails are going to be dead last for snow removal. The path around Druid Hill still shows one set of footprints. Unfortunately, path riders might have to wait a long time till they're seeing pavement. Alas.

I am having to change the route of my century ride this sunday. 20 miles of it was on paths.
It will happen though.  current/smile

Re: B&A Trail conditions

Absolutely no way on the trail.  Roads around the airport are all dry and there are riding opportunities but forget the trail for some time to come.

Re: B&A Trail conditions

So anyone know of a cue sheet from the BWI area to Annapolis without the trail?

Re: B&A Trail conditions

Check the cue sheet library, Ann Arundel County rides 50+ miles.  The Elkridge to Davidsonville covers a route and the roads are all dry but like the rest are narrowed down.  I have not ridden all of it since the snow but I ridden parts of it and it is rideable.  In fact I may try it tomorrow if the heat wave persists.

Re: B&A Trail conditions

You can use this Google interactive map to see what roads that I used for a ride to Annapolis from Essex. I met members of the Severna Park Peloton bike club at the "rusty bridge" on the B&A trail that crosses East-West Blvd and we used roads to ride from near there to Annapolis. This ride was after the big snow in December.

There are some areas where I rode on the trail--areas that weren't too deep with snow. There was bumpy frozen-over foot prints on the trail at the time and some areas of the trail were unpassable, because the highway crews used the trails to pile up their excess snow.

Here's the ride as blogged, if you're interested:

2014 mileage=5,156 miles;
2015  mileage=6,200 miles;
2016 mileage=17,503 miles;

Re: B&A Trail conditions

There are sections of the BWI trail open, BUT nearly every place the trail nears a road or driveway, there is a huge pile of plowed snow blocking the trail.

+1 - I took the roads while riding past the airport. There's a big shoulder available from Andover Rd to Dorsey Rd.

The B&A Trail was clear coming home from Annapolis, yesterday, except for this washed out section:

I took this detour around the wash out, coming home (after conferring with a rider in the SPP):

There's a little bridge at the end of Old Jumpers Hole Rd. Crossing the bridge puts you back on the trail just south of Luckies convenience store--about 1/2 a mile from crossing over Jumpers Hole Rd.

Re: B&A Trail conditions

A friend of mine said that the lower portion of the trail has yet to be plowed.  Also, there is a section that was washed out.  He sent a picture and it looked pretty bad.  Maybe 30-40 yards of trail was gone.

Re: B&A Trail conditions

On Saturday and Sunday, we rode the entire trail and with the exception of the washed out section, for which there is an easy detour as Isaias showed, it is completely clear.  There is some construction work near the ranger station and the trail is dirty/muddy in that area.
