Properly tough charges for an apparently incredibly irresponsible act. Here's to the new States Attorney being aggressive in pursuing the toughest charges possible with the evidence available.

I am as interested as anyone in seeing the guilty prosecuted under Maryland law which appears to protect cyclists pretty well thanks to the many biking organizations and our legislature. From what I have read in the paper I expect that criminal charges will be forthcoming, but it is unbecoming to state as "facts", things we don't know. I ride that route nearly every week as I live 5 blocks south on Roland Avenue. It appears to be one of the safest and newly paved bike lanes in the city. Not high traffic and certainly not on a Saturday afternoon. But to my knowledge there were no eye witnesses, so unless the driver makes a statement supporting the charges the prosecutor is seeking, they must take their time and build a forensic case. That takes time. It would seem likely that Tom was in the bike lane but I don't recall a witness saying that. The incident happened just over the crest of a pretty substantial hill coming from Lake Ave and just past a bus stop so there could be extenuating circumstances. I prefer to follow the case and let our justice system work to presuming facts we don't know or bringing someone's past into this incident 4 years later.

I guess some people need to vent and this is as good a place to do so as any, but I prefer to celebrate the life of a fellow cyclist, a father, a husband and a brother. Tom's death, like his life, has brought bicycle and driver safety into the spot light. Let that be the message until the facts are known and charges brought.

My thoughts and prayers to Tom and his family. I live in the 5000 block of Roland Avenue and ride that route nearly everyday. Can't imagine a safer place to ride, but let's show restraint until the facts come out.

Does anyone have a cue sheet or recommend bike route from Baltimore to Ocean City? Or from east of the Key Bridge to OC?

Ellicot City is nice in that direction, not sure about telcummuting routes downtown. Roland Park is about 6 miles north of downtown near Johns Hopkins University with easy cycle commuting to downtown via Charles street, and auto access to I-83 north to Baltimore County and other points north where there are beautiful BBC rides. Many of us ride in both Howard County and north and west of the city. There are many beautiful rides in all thos areas but only a few rides you can "ride" to. Most of us drive to the ride starting points.
