The closest alternate crossing of the C&D Canal is the Summit Bridge in Delaware, approximately 4 miles east of the Chesapeake City Bridge.  (The Summit Bridge carries US 301, DE 896, and DE 71 across the canal.)  Using it will add about 9 miles to your drive.

Here's how to do it:
1. Follow the directions from Baltimore as you normally would until you reach Elkton.
2. When you reach the intersection of Routes 213 & 40 (by the Burger King), turn left on Rt. 40 East and go 4.8 miles.
3. Turn right on DE 896/US301 South. (There's a big green overhead sign that says 896 South / 301 South / Middletown / Dover.  You can't miss it.) Continue 5.4 miles.
4. Immediately after crossing the Summit Bridge over the canal, turn right onto DE 15 South (Bethel Church Rd.) Go 0.9 miles.
5. At the traffic circle, turn right on DE 286 West (Bethel Church Rd.) and go 3.3 miles to Chesapeake City, MD.
6. Turn left on George St. and continue the rest of the way through town.
7. Get back on MD 213 South and continue to Bohemia Manor HS.

As for me, I live closer to Annapolis than to Baltimore, so I plan to head for the Bay Bridge as I usually do.

Beginning Monday June 6, 2016, one lane of the MD Route 213 bridge over the C&D Canal in Chesapeake City will be closed until October.  The closure is due to a repainting project on the bridge.

During the closure, traffic on the bridge will be one-way, controlled by temporary traffic signals at each end of the bridge which will alternate between northbound and southbound traffic flow every few minutes.

Participants in the BBC Flatlands Tour on June 18 should do one of the following when driving to Chesapeake City for the event:
1. Allow additional drive time for any delays that may be encountered at the bridge, OR
2. Choose an alternate route that does not utilize the Rt. 213 bridge over the C&D Canal.

Subject: BBC Flatlands-(Looking for a rider to join me)

BBC--
I'm an experience rider (Oxon Hill BC), and I'm interested in having 1-2,other riders join me to do the 77-mile route or the 63-mile route (wld like to do the 77miler). I have NOT done any of the routes before.
I cycle  70-100miles per week.

I would have an overall AMS of 14ish-15ish, (breaks @ 15-20miles ea).

I live in Bowie, MD near the Rt 50/301 interchange. (Bowie Baysox Stadium)

I'd be willing to drive my van, taking 1-passenger w/ me and could carry a total of our 2-bikes, & a 3rd bike.  All bikes would fit inside my van.
Folks could meet me at the Lowe's parking lot in Bowie, MD. Would live Bowie by 6:15am.

NO go for me if raining or greater than 40% chance.

Could you circulate my name for compatible riders that may be interested carpooling w/ me and/or meeting me at the starting point for riding company.

Thanks!

Thanks for the explanation, Ed.
In addition to the "Ride Events" category, I just added the "All-pace Long" category to the listing, so it should show up in tomorrow morning's "next two days' rides" e-mail.  We'll see.
Ken

No, it's not final.
Last week (4/4) I changed the Flatlands Tour date to June 9 because there was a conflicting event at the school on June 23.  However, this week (4/11) I was told by the school representative that June 9 was the rain date for their graduation, and they won't know whether this date will actually be available until two days beforehand (June 7).  So I will have to change the date again, most likely back to June 16.  (June 2 is too soon after KCSF.  June 30 would work, but that's the weekend of Tour de Montes, and I'd prefer not to compete with it.)

I have changed the tentative date for the Flatlands Tour FROM Saturday June 16, 2012 TO Saturday June 23, 2012 in order to avoid a conflict with another cycling event.

Please note that at this point, the date of the event is still tentative, pending confirmation from the school where the event starts.
