Where to Pedal in OC
Category: Social

I believe Rte 1 is coastal highway.

Parking in RB is a challenge from memorial day ~ labor day.  I usally ride the bike or scooter downton so parking is easy.  We also purchase a summer pass, $200 I think, that can be used for certain streets several blocks off Rehoboth Avenue.  There is also the ability to purchase shorter term parking passes, maybe daily or weekend, I'm not certain.

There are plenty of interesting spots to stop for a visit along Route 1 from the beaches, to the construction and/or marina at Indian River (including the neat litle guest houses), downtown Fenwick, Bethany, Dewey & Rehoboth, etc.

I am familiar with the Delaware side of Route 1.  The shoulder is nicely paved & pretty wide from Fenwick Island to the outlets in Rehoboth Beach.  The general exception is the existing bridge over the Indian River inlet between Bethany & Dewey (which will hopefully be replaced by the end of this year!).  The bike lane there is about a bike width which is not too bad unless there is a strong crosswind and then it can be terrifying.  I haven't measured distances in a while, but it is probably 20 miles from the state line to downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Have fun!

Westminster Gran Fondo in October looks interesting.  Is this new?

Garrett County Gran Fondo looks challenging.  I have registered for this one.

Seagull on a fixie can be fun.  I ride a Masi fixie on the eastern shore a lot with 43 * 14 gearing (80+/- inches).  There generally isn't much of a need for derailleurs over there unless it is really windy or if you want to keep up with a fast tandem or an even faster washing machine.  I would be interested in one of those multispeed fixie hubs.  Thus far have not seen any need for the freewheel, but it is there as a bailout.

I will bring these back from DE next time we are down -- probably two weeks.  Will e-mail when I have them.

I will need to bring the trainer to Catonsville from Delaware.  Expect to be in DE in two weeks.  I will advise when it is here in Catonsville.

In Rehoboth Beach, about 12 inches of snow by my guess.  Rode 2.5 hours Sunday morning before the snow.  Will be inside all day today except when shoveling.

Another fun winter begins ...

MT,

Thanks for the forecast!

Hope you are right on the 80% prediction ...

Rode Hamburg, Middle Point & Coxey Brown today.  Low 30's & a fairly strong north(?) wind.  Nearly run over by a fuel delivery truck while descending the unpaved Rum Springs.  Was afraid to challenge Harp Hill with the wind.

Cheers!

Jim
