The Tenth Annual

GREENCASTLE GREAT ESCAPE

June 7 - 9, 2024

Come to Greencastle, Pennsylvania the weekend of June 7 - 9 for one, two or three days of great cycling in the valleys of south central Pennsylvania.

Rides: Again this year, our Saturday rides will start at Cowans Gap State Park, about a half-hour drive from the Greencastle Holiday Inn Express (formerly the Comfort Inn), where most participants will be staying, while our Friday and Sunday rides will begin at our traditional ride start in Antrim Township Community Park.

From Cowans Gap our featured rides will head north to the twin boroughs of Orbisonia/Rockhill Furnace, home of the historic East Broad Top Railroad, the only surviving narrow-gauge railroad east of the Rocky Mountains, and the Rockhill Trolley Museum.  An eight-mile loop from Orbisonia/Rockhill has been added this year to give riders the opportunity to take pictures or videos of the 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotive highballing along the EBT mainline. (Because of time constraints, it is recommended that those who wish to ride the train drive up and ride it another day).

For those who don't want to tackle the 45+ mile roundtrip to the East Broad Top (or for those who just don't like historic trains), there will be shorter rides through Burnt Cabins, Shade Gap and Neelyton, plus one or two longer rides through the Shade, Tuscarora and Allen's Valleys. And, despite the way these rides may look on a relief map, these rides are rolling, not hilly. Also, on Friday and Sunday, riders can choose from the traditional great selection of 20+ rides through the Cumberland Valley from Antrim Township Park.

START LOCATION/TIMES: Rides will start at 9:30 a.m. Friday from Antrim Township Park (where we will be parking in Lot #10 at the north end of the park), 8:30 a.m. Saturday from Cowans Gap, and 8:30 a.m. Sunday from Antrim Township Park. All rides are leaderless and without SAG support, and participants must sign liability waivers at the start of each ride, just as they would if they were going on a BBC weekend ride.

EVENING EVENTS: Group meals are being planned for Friday and Saturday evenings at local restaurants/pubs. Details will follow.

LODGING: The club has reserved a block of rooms at a special rate at the Holiday Inn Express (formerly the Comfort Inn) across from I-81 Exit 3. Participants can book a room with either a single king-size bed or two queen-size beds for $119 per night (plus tax) by clicking on this link, or by calling the motel's front desk at 717- 597-8164 and identifying themselves as members of the Baltimore Bicycling Club. Rooms will be held until May 24. Each room has a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, flat-screen TV with cable/satellite and premium channels, and Wi-Fi. A complimentary breakfast is included.

If you are unable to get a room at the Holiday Inn Express – or if you just want to save a few dollars – the Super 8 on PA 16 just east of Exit 5 offers the same amenities, including a free breakfast, but has smallerrooms and lower rates. There are also plenty of motels just off of I-81 in Hagerstown and Chambersburg, as well as a couple of bed-and-breakfasts in Greencastle and nearbytowns.

Helmets are required on all rides.
