Red Rum Ride:

Ride leader is Mark Tabb this year with Jim Guild and/or Steve Zeldin as backups.  First 18 and last 15 is very gentle.  The rest is tough for April 19th.  Six mile climb over South Mountain at mile 18 (very hard-lots of 14% grades) and then a two mile climb back over the another side of the mountain. The six mile climb is one of my favorites and almost traffic free. Lunch at mile 42 (if open/after both climbs) or mile 56 in Emittsburg after another one mile climb. Ride leader is in the usual poor winter shape so will be lucky to finish even though the entire ride is only an 8 out of 10. Rain (or extreme winds) date is April 20th-the next day at the same time.

Jim Guild notes:

I changed the Red Rum cue sheet.  I rode this about a month or so after the burnout last year and like the route.  Basically there are two changes:

1.       It was shortened to be close to a metric (just short).  This was done by turning left on Old Forge at the top of South Mountain.  This rejoins the original cue sheet at Mentzer Gap.  The descent is really nice (and not a bad climb the other way).

2.       The section along Route 16 was taken out.  The shoulder seemed really bad last year with cutting to alarm drivers and a lot of gravel so I was forced to ride on the road itself and was very uncomfortable.  The new route takes Old Forge across Mentzer Gap with a really short section on Route 16.  The climb up to Buena Vista is on Old Route 16 which is a nice substitute to the climb on Mentzer Gap being taken out.  FYI:  If anyone wants to do the old route to Mont Alto and then incorporate the new section that eliminates Route 16 it is easy to do.  I do not plan on updating the long cue sheet at this time, but will likely take the 2016 version of the cue sheet along with the 2017 version.
