The Fourth Annual

GREENCASTLE GREAT ESCAPE

June 8 - 10, 2018

Come to Greencastle, Pennsylvania the weekend of June 8 - 10 for one, two or three days of cycling in the breathtakingly beautiful Cumberland Valley.  Here you will find a cyclist's paradise with a network of well-maintained, low-traffic roads laid down on a gently rolling landscape of farms, villages and small towns, framed by soft blue mountain backdrops in almost any direction you look.

There are rides for every level of ability and ambition.  Participants can choose from a selection of more than 20 rides, ranging in length from a short 30-mile jog to Mercersburg to a phenomonally scenic century into the heart of Pennsylvania's Appalachian ridge and valley region.  Most of the rides, including the century, can be characterized as gently rolling to rolling, with an occasional hill.

All rides start and end in the north (last) parking lot of Antrim Township Community Park on Grant Shook Road.  The park has water and restrooms.  Start times are 9:30 a.m. Friday, and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Rides are leaderless and without SAG support, and participants must sign liability waivers at the start of each ride, just as they would if they were going on a normal BBC weekend ride.

Two evening social functions are planned:  an informal gathering on Friday evening at Brother's Pizza

(next to the Comfort Inn) and a Saturday evening dinner at The John Allison Public House, which has reasonably-priced entrees and a great selection of craft beers on tap.

Lodging is left up to the participants.  The Comfort Inn across from I-81 Exit 3 is recommended.  Each room has a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, television and free Wi-Fi, and a complimentary breakfast is included.  Rates range upward from about $90 per night, depending on when and through which agency you book your room.  The Super 8 on PA 16 just east of Exit 5 offers the same amenities, including a free breakfast, but has smaller rooms and lower rates ($60 to $70 per night).  Finally, for completeness I should mention the Castle Motel (NOT the Castle Green Motel) on US 11 just north of town, which offers a CLEAN room with all the amenities offered by the other two motels, minus the free breakfast, for under $30 per night.  Unfortunately, the Castle Motel has only eight units and is almost always booked up.  There are also plenty of motels just off of I-81 in Hagerstown and Chambersburg, as well as a couple of bed-and-breakfasts in Greencastle.

BBC's 34th ANNUAL INSTRUCTIONAL CYCLING SERIES

The BALTIMORE BICYCLING CLUB'S very popular Instructional Cycling Series will begin with an orientation to be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the Loch Raven Room on the second floor of the University Union at Towson University.  Directions to the school are provided below.

This series is offered to anyone over 16 years of age interested in learning the basic skills of cycling, including doing minor road repairs and improving as a rider.  We can help you find your best riding level and develop so you can ride on the BBC casual rides by the end of the series.  Experienced riders can meet other BBC members and learn about group riding.  The cycling series will cover both road and recreational trail riding.  And we do have something for faster riders. Athletes and charity riders wanting to work on their gearing, cycling techniques and road skills are welcome.

At the orientation, we will demonstrate cycling skills and techniques, discuss bicycles, equipment and clothing and answer any questions about the program.  We will watch a short, informative video on cycling safety and bike handling.  The indoor orientation will be held RAIN OR SHINE.  Weather permitting, anyone who wants to do so can join us for a short ride following the orientation.  You must have a bicycle and wear a helmet to ride.

DIRECTIONS– Take Exit 25 – Charles Street- from the Baltimore Beltway (I‑695) and go South on Charles Street for approximately 2.1 miles (get in left turn lane).  Make a left on Towsontown Blvd. and at the second traffic light make a right onto Osler Drive. Immediately get into the left lane, go about 600 feet and make a left at the first traffic light.  Enter the parking garage and park - the University Union is just past the far end of the parking garage.  If you use the back door, you will need to take the stairs or elevator up to the second floor.  If you walk around the building to the front door, you will enter on the second floor.

ORIENTATION– Sunday, April 15, 2018 – The University Union at Towson University at 10:30 a.m.

RIDE SCHEDULE– (Note that all rides start at 10:00 a.m., not 10:30)

QUESTIONWhat kind of bike will I need? Begin with any bike in reasonably sound condition. Bring it to the orientation and we will check it. However, you do not need a bike for the orientation. Do not buy a new bike yet; we can help you decide what style and size of bike is right for you!

QUESTIONWhat is the cost of the instructional orientation and cycling series? The entire program is FREE. It is open to both club and non-club riders. BBC membership is not required. Bring a friend!
