Headlight recommendations wanted

Headlight recommendations wanted

I'd like to get a good strong headlight for riding in the dark (not just at dawn and sunset, but actual darkness). Any recommendations?

Re: Headlight recommendations wanted

Hi Janet,

Great topic for this time of year.

Riding with Barry and Isaias has taught me a lot about lighting:
1. Front lighting is more important for safety than rear lights.
2. In spite of your best intentions, if you ride your bike outside in the winter you will encounter darkness.
3. You can buy more light power for the money now than ever before.
4. Buy the brightest lights  you can afford and run them during the daytime too.
5. Depending on the model you buy, use high output rechargeables and a decent. charger.
6. Spending hundreds of dollars on lighting is easily justified by the protection they provide to your equipment and your health.

It used to be that cheap clip-on battery lights were "be seen" lights and to get enough light to ride swiftly in darkness cost much more. Now there are many clip-ons that are high output.
The Planet Bike Blaze gets great reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Blaze … B0015R1NE4
This is a slightly better version by a diff. company: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YI … amp;sr=8-1
I love the Dinotte lights, both front and rear. They are in the $120+ range. Their website is a bit confusing, but generally they offer two battery systems (AA battery packs and proprietary Lithiums) and the various models are how many (1, 2 or 3) of their lights are in the housing.
For more powerful lighting and advice on L&M brands, Isaias knows more.

Re: Headlight recommendations wanted

Thanks for the recommendations, Bob. I am willing to spend as much as necessary for a good headlight, and I know the little clip-on ones won't do the trick in full darkness; I'm just not sure of the brand and model to buy.
