Calendar additions?

Calendar additions?

As Aaron Mongeau requested in his 'Races' forum post, I not only feel that racing events should be posted but most cycling events.  We have the Maryland State Bicycle Symposium posted, and I've posted the Westminster Swap Meet at the Carroll County Farm Museum essentially as a leaderless ride.  I'm not sure if I was bending the rules, but that event and others like it are social events, and can help out cyclists as a means to aid their bicycle addictions.  Coming up are the Trexlertown Velodrome Bicycle Swap Meet Saturday, May 5, the Classic Rendezvous Classic Bicycle show in Leesburg Sunday, June 10.  These are events I'd like to encourage other riders to attend and would like to post to the calendar.  Are there any issues with this?  I know these events are privately organized, but I believe it to be to our advantage to have them brought to our awareness.

Regards, and Happy trails,

Re: Calendar additions?

I like the idea of a "go to spot" for MD general cycling that is (kind of) what you're proposing isn't it?. But I think the current construct of our calender has some limitations in space and it gets hard to comprehend quickly.  But wait, let me go back to one stop shop idea. The BBC is an important cycling advocate, event promoter, and most importantly a giant resource for group rides. The Calender serves our club needs well, I think. So the next question to ask would be, is the calender being used by those outside the club to monitor area events? Should it? I think so. I think we have the base to create a great information resource for area cycling. However, doing this would put our simple format at risk of becoming very complicated, and crowded.

So if we can do it, should we?

Re: Calendar additions?

Hi all,
As one of my college professors said" you have your lumpers and you have your splitters". The first version of the current web site had  separate rides and events calendars; the Board felt a combined calendar worked better. I think the current calendar is quite full on weekend days. If we are to add more events, we may need to go back to separate calendars. I think Will has offered all the possible ways to find rides and events that Joomla, the program the web site is written in, allows. The web site has the calendar, the mobile list and the regular list for rides and events. To do it any better may require a new web site.

Re: Calendar additions?

The best thing about how Will has set up the calendar is that it can easily accommodate all the different rides and events AND allow the user to view only those categories they want to see.

Adding BBC race events (a critical component of our club, BTW) as a new category is easy enough. If you don't want to see it- toggle it off. The racers can do the same with any of the existing categories. I'm in favor of any action which helps the wide range of ridership in the BBC understand what we're all up to.

Re: Calendar additions?

We already have 12 ride categories. Is 13 really too many?

I don't think 13 is excessive at all. How many different types and levels are there of bikes at your favorite shop? I think it's more important to ensure these options to easy to find though. And buy the same token the other events that Mentioned by Dan A. may fit under Advocacy Event heading, not sure who makes that call though.

Maybe this is another string but, what about making a stand alone button for the Calender? Currently the only link is in the small text on the left, that can stay there but what about a great big thing up near the banner?

Re: Calendar additions?

Completely agree with you again mr. mojo.

It'd be very nice having the calendar launch (in a NEW window) from a button at the top of the home page.
(why again is our first button "links" that goes to three charity rides and a job listing from 2010???)

Re: Calendar additions?

I just added Google Maps to the ride addition interface.  If you put in a vague ride start or use the three letter code there is a field to enter a more precise start address.
