Gary's Thursday 3/8/2012 Ride to Madonna

Gary's Thursday 3/8/2012 Ride to Madonna

I rode up to Oregon Ridge for Gary Kelly's  Thursday Ride to Madonna.  Advertised as a 44 mile effort to get Gary in shape for Middle Age and and Bike Florida.  I still cannot figure out where climbing hills comes into riding in Florida, however today was windy enough.

I ride into the Lodge parking lot with plenty of time and Gary offers me a choice of fresh bagels to power the ride.  Clearly this will be a carb-fest ride.  (Unlike the sugar-fest Sunday rides Gary has been posting).  I like this middle-aged stuff, GO GARY!!!

Nine riders (or maybe more) push off from Oregon Ridge and find the SW wind shoving us along at a great pace.  We pick up Jeb at the Butler Store and do a slow pedal on Stringtown waiting for a dropped chain.  From there its a spirited ride to the top of Sheppard and a vote for left or right on Troyer.  Ed rolls in last and breaks the tie vote and we set off left on Troyer for an additional two miles.  Troyer is open and fast and we are doing 25+ to Rt 23.

We all did a nice break at Madonna High's, munching on bagels and drinking juice and coffee.  Carol requests a shorter way back and we give her the choice of doing Old York instead of Hess to Carroll.  Corbett headed west begins a painful slog into the wind which somehow becomes a tailwind for the Glencoe descent.  And the wind is back for the climb up Belfast to Stringtown and then a total slam in the face on Priceville after the Meetinghouse.

Back at Oregon Ridge at 70F and sun with an overall of 16.7 or so.  Feels like summer!

Thanks to Gary Kelly, ride leader par excellance..
