Late Addition for Saturday the 16th: 13-15mph ride from Meadowood Park

Late Addition for Saturday the 16th: 13-15mph ride from Meadowood Park

Slow-Twitch Sally seeks the Holy Grail: espresso and pastries at Snickerdoodle. The quest is more fun with company.

BEWARE: we're going up Piney Grove, one of the 10 toughest climbs in northern Baltimore County.

Hmmm, I am trying to think of the 10 tough ones:

  1. Piney Grove

  2. Big Falls westbound

  3. Ivy Hill

  4. Cotter

  5. Gunpowder north of Beckleysville

  6. Spooks Hill (the wall between Kidds Schoolhouse and Beckleysville)

  7. Falls Rd (that Falls Rd southbound from Gunpowder River towards Evna)

  8. Evna Rd Northbound

  9. Timber Knoll Rd

  10. Coen Rd (towards Holy Cross)

  11. Vernon

Any other favorites out there?

Ah, but that's in Howard County.  There is a whole different set of hills to climb there...

The list is missing Stockton, Wesley Chapel, and Duncan Hill. I would remove from it Spooks Hill and Falls on the grounds that I can climb them in a compact 34x27, whereas the rest on the list with which I'm acquainted, as well as the three nasties I've added, I will no longer attempt without my 30x27 triple. Now, there was a time when I was stronger and faster, but you know how that goes....

For those who don't check the weather forecast before getting on the bike (what are you, nuts?!): it's going to get blustery of there. Dress more warmly than you think you should.

Specifically the section of Spooks Hill from Kidds Schoolhouse to Beckleysville at 19%.  This section is currently closed for bridge rebuilding; and
The section of Falls Rd below Prettyboy Dam from the steel bridge to the top going towards Evna.
I think you were thinking of the other climbs on Spooks and one of the other many roads named Falls Rd.  I can post a ride doing both: you can use your compact and I my standard cranksets.  For the closed bridge, we would have to descend to the bridge and then U-turn to hit the wall going back up...

A couple in the Catonsville area:

1.  Gun Road leaving Patapsco Valley State Park Avalon -- the bottom leaving the park seems tough, but so is everything these days ...
2.  Arbutus Memorial Park Cemetery -- I rode and ran the mile +/- loop within the cemetery during the summer (very little traffic!) and there is a hill that is not even 1/10 of a mile, but is literally a killer

I think Gunpowder Road north of Beckleysville Road is the toughest road climb wise in Baltimore County.  This is based on perceived exertion and nothing else.

"He's dead, Jim." That hill in the cemetery actually caused you to shuffle off this mortal coil?!

Steve's right about Spooks Hill; I was thinking of a different section.

As to Gunpowder, I'd forgotten about that one. It's "literally" a holy-cow-I-don't-think-I-can-turn-over-the-cranks-again experience.
