April Fools Day Rides - 16+ and 13-15 - Guide/FAQ

April Fools Day Rides - 16+ and 13-15 - Guide/FAQ

On Saturday April 1st from Middletown Rd Park & Ride at 9:30 am
* Steve will lead the 16&Over 44 mile April Fools Ride and
* Ellen will lead the 13-15 30 mile April Fools Ride.

The 30 mile route is completely included in the 44 mile route.
The routes will be structured as multi-segmented progressive cuesheets.
The cuesheets will NOT have anagrammed or disguised road names, and all road names, turns and distances are in normal format.
The route is beautiful, scenic, and rural, on well or newly paved roads.  Time and distance on any busy roads are minimized.  The routes are "Hills and Rolling", there are 3 "hard" hills and the overall "Tabb Score" is about 8.5.  On the other side, the downhills are beautiful, long and sweeping.
This is a fun ride, not a race, although moments of enthusiasm are always encouraged and should be countered with regrouping.

Q: What is a "multi-segmented" cuesheet?
A: The route is broken into segments of about 5 miles each where the segment endpoints are relatively safe and obvious.  The segments are organized into sealed packets.  The ride is thus progressive and the full route is unknown until distribution of the final segment.

Q: What is the distribution mechanism for the segment packets?
A: At ride sign in, the Ride Leader assigns a packet to each rider until all packets are distributed.  Each packet is labeled with its segment number.  The 30 mile ride has 6 segments and the 44 mile ride has 9 segments.  If there are less riders than segments, then some riders may have more than one segment packet.

Q: When can packets be opened?
A: Packets are designed to be opened only when the segment is ridden.  So at ride start, the Segment #1 packet holder will open the Segment #1 packet and distribute it to riders.  13-15 riders should only take 30 mile segment packets.  And 16&Over should only take 44 mile segment packets.  Since the route is designed for regrouping and sweeping, if there are not enough cuesheets, then riders should pair with other riders.

Q: Who "sweeps"?
A: The holder of the NEXT segment might as well sweep the segment since they hold the NEXT segment's cuesheets and they cannot ride the NEXT segment until all riders have NEXT segment cuesheets.
So the current segment packet holder "leads" and the next segment packet holder "sweeps".

Q: Will 13-15 and 16&Over see each other on the route?
A: Yes!  The #1 segment is the same for both groups.  On the 44 mile ride segments 6, 7, 8, and 9 are the same as the 30 mile ride segments 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Therefore, you cannot assume that you will turn where the other riders turn.  Otherwise a 30 mile rider may find themselves on the 44 mile route and vice versa.
Segment #2 will split the groups after about 0.5 miles.  Communicate with the riders in your group, do not get confused, and pay attention to your cuesheet.  Ride safe!

Q: Is there a store stop or restroom break?
A: The only store on either route is just before the route end.  There is an NCR Trail portapot at mile 22.5 on the 30 mile route / mile 35.9 on the 44 mile route.
Steve will have ride cookies for your pocket at ride start.  But if you get hungry riding, bring your own snack as well.

Q: Will I know where I am?
A: Some roads will likely be totally new to you!  Some roads are on other BBC cuesheets.  The 44 mile route may have you riding the same roads more than once.

Q: Can I shortcut the ride?
A: Both routes cross the NCR (Torrey Brown) Trail at several points.  You can do a shortcut return South on the Trail to Parkton and then climb Frederick Rd up to Middletown Rd. (about 0.9 miles).

Q: Will I have Fun?
A: YES, YES, YES!
Ride Safe!

I-83 N, Exit 31 for Middletown Rd. Then Left @ exit and just across the hwy is the Park and Ride on your right.  This is close to, but NOT the Parkton location down by the NCRR trail.
