Unsupported Canal Ride Planning

The ride is tentatively being planned for October 3,and then riding 50+ miles a day to get us to DC by the weekend.  I was planning on taking the train, but since the bike slots are all full until the end of October! (oops) I will be driving and can take 2-3 additional people with their bikes.  So all you need to do is get to DC.  We can meet at Reagan airport where there is long term parking for your car, or up here in Baltimore.
.
Come join me.  This will be fun!

You don't need to be.  We can ride together, eat together and then in the evenings, we camp and you sleep in a luxurious warm comfortable bed with hot water for showers in the morning.  Love to have you join us.

Mirrors are valuable but not infallible, and we use them.  AND I always double check by looking before turning. We KNOW that unfortunately it is really a only a matter of time and miles before having an accident.  This was the exact same situation as Mark had.  Additionally, even though it was all on a camera, the police ruled it a "no fault" accident, since according to the police officer "cars expect to pass bicycles".
.

I am planning on practicing a way to make us a little bit safer.  "BAIL" seems a quicker and louder word than "DITCH".  Is there any consensus language in the community for "Get your  %$#@!!!  body to the right as fast as  F#$@!!!g  possible?

I just experienced a HORRIFIC situation while biking with a friend.  They were in the lane preparing to turn left and signaling.  I looked back and saw a car in the passing lane, not slowing down and coming too fast.  I yelled to "Get Back, go back"  but it was not understood.  .... luckily after 5 hours in the ER, the result seems to be scrapes, bruises and a bent brake.

We have agreed that we will practice telling each other to bail out,.... and doing it. No questions, no hesitation.  Bail OUT seems long, and possibly not distinct enough.  Does the BBC community have any advice?

Unsupported Canal Ride Planning

Hello All,
I am planning on riding the GAP/C&O in October.  I will probably ride the Capital Limited to Pittsburg on a Wednesday (roll on roll off bike storage!) spend the night in Pittsburg, then ride the canal to DC, planning to get into DC on the following weekend so that I can ride the MARC train home to BWI. I figure about 50 miles per day, unsupported and camping.  I am definitely doing this, and if you want to come for all or part of it let me know.  If you want to (wimp out) have rooms, you can join us each day, just to ride.

The planning is so that if people only want to ride the GAP.  They can roll on the train in Cumberland to return DC on Sunday (leave 9:30 am arrive approx. 1pm)  They can then take the MARC Bike Train home.

I have not decided on the dates yet, but will make a decision before August 22nd.  If you want to come and have a date preference... let me know.

Thanks Steve,
We are hoping that Sheppard Rd will be paved by 6/25.  If not paved by then, it is not a problem.  The touring bikes have wider tires, less inflation and generally have no problem with milling, besides they will have been coming from the gravel of the NCR.  I am just looking at maps and using ideas from the ECG  without a good understanding of the roads, the other alternative roads look like they have steeper grades.  Any suggestions are gratefully accepted.  Thank for updating the the map.   Join us?

40 mile overnight loaded camping trip to Susquehanna State Park meeting the Swift Camping Challenge http://builtbyswift.com/swiftcampout/.   We will be getting on the Light Rail in Linthicum at about 8:30 am and riding out of Hunt Valley Light Rail Station at 10am. You can join us at either location.  Any and all people are welcome to join us, but please let me know so that I can fix reservations at the camp site.  This is a great opportunity for anyone that has been thinking about bike touring.  Close to home, short trip (or long if you don't want to use the Light Rail).     If we get enough other people, then we can join together for an evening meal.    Here is the link to the map with elevation:   https://goo.gl/maps/T9r7HjhQGw62.  There will be a couple of places that we will be climbing hills so review the map.  (I may walk them!)   Take the Challenge!

Ride of Silence - Help and Comments

Forum: Advocacy

Ride of Silence Update;  I have got a route that should be comfortable but visible.  Now I need about another 2 people to help me out and ride sweep.  I just don't know how many folks will show up, so I'd like to have a couple extra helpers that are good with bikes and also comfortable with city riding.

Thanks BBC!

Ride of Silence - Help and Comments

Penny Troutner is not able to do the ride of silence this year.  Because I feel that it is important, I am going to organize one. It is SOON and  I need help because Baltimore City is not my regular riding area,

I need help in  knowing all the people in the area that we should honor.
I have a list of 3 ghost bikes. Jack Yates' at Maryland and Lafayette, Nathan Krasnapolar's on University near the intersection with 39th, and Tom Palermo's on the 5700 block of Roland Ave.   Are there more?  Are there other people from the area that we need to have on a list, even if there is no ghost bike?

If you knew them would you come and say something?  Or send me something to read?

If you have opinions about the cue sheet https://goo.gl/maps/RigqiJw5Tjw, I will be glad to hear your comments (just be nice, my ego is fragile!)

They will be on the B&A, just have them look up the East Coast Greenway.

Admittedly, a bunch of that route is still a bit rough, but it is developing.  However, the route into Balto from B&A is pretty good, and mostly on bike trails.

If I am around, they can e-mail me  Lydia.c.cunningham@gmail.com  and I will lead them in.  Still, they shouldn't need a guide.  How did they get here from Colorado?.
