Picnic, paying with PayPal
Category: Social

I signed up for the picnic and paid with PayPal (and I appreciate having that option!).  A hint for others paying via PayPal: you will get a popup box with two buttons that say "Continue" and "Cart".  Be sure to click on "Cart" to check out and pay. If you click "Continue", the popup box goes away, and nothing else happens, there was no obvious way to check out.

Crack in btwn R and center lane that go straight on Pratt
Forum: Road Problems

Baltimore City Department of Transportation. 410-361-9296 or email transportation@baltimorecity.gov

I sent them a question via email when the lanes were closed on the JFX earlier this year, and actually got a phone call from someone in the department.

The former Painted Pig store has reopened
Category: Social

The store formerly known as the Painted Pig, at the corner of Shepperd Rd. and Troyer Rd. in the Monkton area, has reopened under new management.  The new name is Woody's Hitching Post.  They are not fully stocked yet, but they have Gatorade and other drinks, Clif Bars and some other snacks available now.  Unfortunately they are closed on Sundays.  Their hours are:
Monday through Friday: 6:00am - 3:00pm
Saturday:  7:00am - 2:00pm
Sunday: CLOSED

The 2012 Corn Roast cue sheets, for the Union Mills Homestead rides on Saturday 8/4/12, are now available in the cue library.  They are the same as the 2010 and 2011 versions except that all rides now start and end at the parking lot on Old Hanover Rd., instead of Rt. 97.
I posted both a pdf and Excel version named "2012 Corn Roast 28-40-52" in the "Carroll County - Under 50 miles" repository.
I posted a pdf "2012 Corn Roast 64 miles" in the "Carroll County - over 50+ miles" repository.

There will be hard copies available at the ride start, of course.

PLEASE NOTE:  I had uploaded the Excel spreadsheet of the 28-40-52 cue sheets on Sunday 7/29/12, and that version has a missing cue in the 52 mile cue sheet.  I removed that file from the repository.  DO NOT USE THAT VERSION.

A cooler of water at the ride start
Category: Social

Thanks to ride leader Mark Raginsky for bringing a cooler of ice water to the ride start on Sunday.  The water was still cold after the ride, and it was VERY much appreciated then, when all I had was warm water and gatorade.  Bringing a cooler is such a good idea, I want to encourage other ride leaders and/or participants to do it this summer.

I have an old Raleigh mountain bike in good condition that I will donate.  It belonged to my son, who coincidentally is in Cameroon right now!   I'm sending an email to Tim.

New to area... Towson to Hunt Valley?
Category: Social

I live nearby, in Lutherville.  Your second route is better. The Beltway interchange on Dulaney Valley Rd. is still pretty scary, but better than York Rd. or Charles St. It's 5 lanes wide at that point. If you are going north on Dulaney Valley, you can make a left on Charmuth Rd. (there's a left-turn-only lane and a traffic light) and take Charmuth all the way to Ridgely.  Charmuth is a residential street.

You should test drive these routes during your normal commute time, of course, since rush hour traffic is completely different than weekend traffic, and afternoon rush hour is usually worse than the morning.

The article says that the family settled their civil suit, and they insisted that the driver permanently give up her driver's license.

Baltimore Sun story mentions BBC
Category: Social

There is an article in the Baltimore Sun that mentions the BBC, specifically the Instructional Ride Series with quotes from Gordon Peltz, and a link to our web page.

In the next few weeks, ride leaders might want to watch out for newbies showing up at their ride starts after reading the article, totally unprepared to ride 30 or 40 miles.  I biked to work on Bike to Work day, and met a guy who didn't even have a water bottle or a cage to hold one. We were biking 12 miles from downtown Baltimore to Towson/Lutherville.

Patrick,
Welcome!  You and your girlfriend should come to the Instructional Ride series which starts May 1st. It's for people who are new to road biking or whose skills are rusty. Click on the "Instructional Rides" link in the Main Menu on the left.
