BBC Picnic July 20, 2025
This year it wasn't rain or shine; it was rain and shine.
The nine rider 16&Over group took one glance at the sky, agreed rain was likely, and rode off doing the Russell’s Three Taverns 59 mile loop. The rain waned after a wet 30 minutes. The group rolled fast with a tailwind, only to be challenged by the climb over Stone Jug. Return from Biglerville featured some impressive cloudscapes with mountain views. A fine ride followed by a fine picnic!
Ride leaders and riders for the 38 and 27 mile routes were studying the weather app radar to make an informed decision about when to head out. With a high level of confidence that the rain would cease at 9 am, the rides were postponed allowing the riders on the 38 and 27 mile routes to depart under almost sunny skies. The roads dried quickly and the weather turned into a fine day for all.
About two dozen cyclists signed in for the 38 mile route. The group included some faster riders who led the way out on Harney Road and then north on familiar rolling roads toward Adams Co., PA.. Traversing roads through the Gettysburg battlefield before and after the rest stop, and passing farm fields and picturesque red barns, the riders were hungry when they arrived back at the park for the picnic.
The 27-mile ride was fun and full of camaraderie! The group spread out over the route, regrouped at the rest stop, and rode back together just in time for the food. The pace was fast, and the weather was almost perfect--a nice breeze and we only got rained on once after the earlier downpour. The riders included three riders who just completed the ICS course (as well as two instructors!)
Riders also selected the 48 and 13 mile rides with more people doing the 13 mile ride this year because of the weather.
Some club members didn't show up to bike due to the presence of rain in the forecast. But as conditions improved, there was a good turnout when members turned up in time for the robust BBQ lunch. The caterers kept the food trays full and we were all well satiated.
Once again, Bill Blankenship coordinated an excellent ride and picnic event for our bike club members. Thanks also to the ride leaders: Bob Rohlfing, Ellen Hochman, and Adriana Pukalski.
