Beware of Hogweed!

Tis the season for roadside stops, but be aware of the vegetation alongside the road. The plant pictured here in this photo from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is known as giant hogweed, and it can cause a rash worse than poison ivy. BBC member Lydia Cunningham shares her experiences with it in this article.  If you’ve seen giant hogweed in Maryland, please contact the Plant Protection and Weed Management Section of the Maryland Department of Agriculture at (410) 841-5920

Monument to Monument Ride on May 4

The Monument to Monument (M2M) Ride is a 97-mile round trip single day ride from Baltimore to Washington on lightly trafficked roads. Riders maintain a slow, steady conversational pace. Last year over 75 riders participated, and pictured on the left are riders from the 2012. Want to learn more? Check out ride leader Bob Wagner's blog.

2013 Corn Roast

Thanks to the help of BBC volunteers, the 2013 Annual Union Mills Corn Roast rides were a great success. On August 3, four ride groups left early from Union Mills and returned for a summer feast of fresh corn, fried chicken, applesauce, rolls, tomatoes, and iced tea. Read more about the ride in Gloria Epstein's ride report.

Biking to Breakfast

The June 8, 2013 Pancake Breakfast at the Long Green Valley Church of the Brethren was a big success. Bill Weisand was joined by John H., George C., Evie R., Mike R., Kasice P., Nick T. & Ron C.  The group rode under partly overcast skies and some humidity.  They arrived at breakfast at about 9:30 and were treated to pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries, biscuits and gravy, and coffee, tea, water, & juices.  The food was delicious. The church appreciated BBC members being there, and members felt like they were being good ambassadors for cycling. After the group got back on the road, they noticed that the humidity was less and there was a nice cool breeze - perfect riding weather.  Upon getting back to the ride start, they loaded bikes and equipment into their cars and as they were about to take off, it started raining. What perfect timing!

2013 Kent County Spring Fling

This year's Spring Fling featured 312 riders enjoying rides from 11 miles up to a century on low-traffic, scenic roads. As you can see in pictures from the event, the weekend was somewhat chilly, but the sun was much appreciated. In addition to cycling, the Spring Fling features great food, wine with dinner, dessert, music, and lots of socializing. If you didn't make it this year, hope to see you in 2014. Registration will open on Jan. 1st.

Spring Ride to North Beach

Pictured are some of the riders from the April 28th 10 to 12 mph North Beach Ride. The group stopped at Sweet Sue's Bake Shop in North Beach for sandwiches and bakery treats. The cupcakes were delicious and at least one rider savored an eclair to power the return trip. Joan Grindell (not pictured) led the ride on a loop from Southern High School through scenic Anne Arundel County countryside to the quiet waterfront destination at the mid-point. You can tell by the mixed apparel that the arrival of spring was still uncertain.

Bikeshare Funding: Open for Comment through April 17

Bikesharing is a system in which bicycles are available for shared use between established stations. It provides an affordable option for short distance trips and can help solve the "last mile" problem, connecting public transportation riders to their final destinations. Bikesharing is not a substitute for private bike rental services, but rather it provides an option for short-distance trips.

The Baltimore Regional Transportation Board is seeking comments on approving funding for various Maryland Bikeshare projects. See this Bikeshare flyer for further information and how you can share your thoughts and ideas.
